Personalized 3D prints that sell on Etsy are not the same as prints that look busy in a feed. As of late August 2026, the listings with Bestseller badges and real review volume cluster into four families: name-on-plastic sold cheap and fast, photo lamps, painted photo figurines, and occupation desk plates. Rankings move. The model contract for each family does not.
What you will learn: which personalized SKUs actually move; what the buyer types; what has to live in the Rig Cad tree so a long name, a thin stroke, or a ring hole cannot silently fail; and which article in this series to open next.
This is a shop map, not a ranking. Parametric Goods: From Customer Choice to Printable Product is the fulfillment path once a family is chosen.
Three lanes, not one catalog
Table: Observed listing prices and what the buyer actually customizes, late August 2026.
| Lane | Typical list | What the buyer sends | Why it sells |
|---|---|---|---|
| Name on plastic | 3–12 USD volume, 15–25 USD if the fonts are better | A name, two colors | Everyday use, party favors, back-to-school |
| Photo lamp | 9–60 USD, 45–90 USD with an LED base | A photo, optional date | Pet, wedding, memorial. Each unit is unique. |
| Photo figurine | 40–100 USD | A photo, pose, clothes | Highest willingness to pay. Hand paint is the differentiator. |
| Desk / teacher plate | 9–40 USD | Name plus title | Graduation, classroom, new job |
Pencil toppers ride the same August window as the cheap tags. Flexi animals still move the most units, but they are barely personalized and look like the same free file everywhere.
What belongs in the model
The listing field is a variable. Everything that must survive a long name, a thin glyph, or a 4 mm ring is derived or validated from that variable.
Table: Each selling family, the inputs, and the next article.
| Family | Buyer input | Hold in the tree | Open next |
|---|---|---|---|
| Name tag / keychain / bottle tag | Name, two filament colors | Character limit, stroke, hole, web | Text as Geometry |
| Pencil topper | Child or teacher name | Same text rules, plus a grip that survives a backpack | Text as Geometry |
| Desk plate | Name + title (Teacher, RN) | Two lines, plate width from the longer line | Beyond Sliders |
| Lithophane lamp | Photo, optional name on the base | Thickness from brightness, not a font. Photo rights in the order record. | Versioned Production |
| Photo figurine | Photo | Out of scope for a garage FDM tag shop unless you already sculpt and paint | This page, then stop |
| Ring / snap / lid | Hardware size | Coupon first. Hole is a difference child, oversized. | Fits, Clearances, and Tolerances |
A starting band for FDM PLA on a 0.4 mm nozzle: 12 characters, three tested fonts, raised stroke at least 0.8 mm, web at least 1.6 mm around a 4 mm ring hole. Other nozzles need their own band.
- Receive the name and colors
- Open the tag project
- Type the listing field
- Inspect stroke and hole
- Export and nest the plate
- Print, ring, ship
How Rig Cad holds a name
The customer never opens Rig Cad. They type in the listing or in a configurator. You keep one project per family.
textis the listing field. It is a string, not a mesh you rebuild by hand.fontis a production dependency. Pin the file. Do not let a missing glyph fall back in silence.tag_widthfollows the measured text, or it is clamped so III and WWW both sit on a plate that still has a web.- The ring is a cylinder subtracted from the plate.
cutterDepthis derived from thickness so a thicker tag stays a through-hole. - Two colors are two solids, not a texture. Primary and secondary filament are the listing dropdowns.
Text as Geometry is the treatment table (raised, recessed, cut-through). Beyond Sliders is the safe region when length, hole, and web fight each other.
The generator below is the same recipe with the variables exposed. Type a name. Width, hole, and thickness stay on the tree.
Four styles, one contract
These four projects are the shop's current tag and plate family. The silhouette changes. The contract does not: a string, a font, a hole or a stand, two colors.
A chunky bag tag, a script tag, a rounded keychain, and a sweeping desk plate. Use them as the listing photos' live twins. A buyer who types Olivia here should get the same geometry you will print.
What not to chase
- Generic flexi dragons and animal multipacks. Same STL, same photos, AliExpress twins.
- Name keychains under about 8 USD if you value machine time. Volume at 3 USD is a price war.
- Gold-acrylic wedding toppers. That category's money is wood and acrylic, not FDM.
- Unlicensed Disney, Marvel, or D&D marks in the title. Etsy's creativity rules and takedowns both apply.
- Unmodified free files listed as original work.
Photo figurines sell. They are a sculpt-and-paint shop, not a second slider on the tag project.
When the families spike
Table: List the SKU six to eight weeks before the window.
| Window | What to have live |
|---|---|
| Late August (now) | School bag tags, pencil toppers, teacher plates |
| September–October | Halloween cutters, spooky decor |
| November–December | Lithophanes, ornaments, named gifts |
| February | Couples plates, Valentine lithophanes |
| May | Mother's Day lamps, graduation plates, teachers |
| June | Wedding favors, Father's Day desk items |
Christmas ornaments should already be live in August. A year on the title (2026) is enough seasonality for an ornament family.
Next
Pick one family and keep the others off the first listing.
Parametric Goods: From Customer Choice to Printable Product is how an order becomes a file. Text as Geometry is the tag and plate work. Pricing Customized 3D Prints is the quote. Labor dominates a 3 USD tag. Price the set, not the single.
Lithophanes are the missing sibling in this series: image as a thickness field, not a font. Treat the photo, the crop, and the consent as the production record.
