Personalized Prints That Sell

Personalized 3D prints that sell on Etsy are not the same as prints that look busy in a feed. As of late August 2026, the listings with Bestseller badges and real review volume cluster into four families: name-on-plastic sold cheap and fast, photo lamps, painted photo figurines, and occupation desk plates. Rankings move. The model contract for each family does not.

Pencil toppers ride the same August window as the cheap tags. Flexi animals still move the most units, but they are barely personalized and look like the same free file everywhere.

The listing field is a variable. Everything that must survive a long name, a thin glyph, or a 4 mm ring is derived or validated from that variable.

A starting band for FDM PLA on a 0.4 mm nozzle: 12 characters, three tested fonts, raised stroke at least 0.8 mm, web at least 1.6 mm around a 4 mm ring hole. Other nozzles need their own band.

The customer never opens Rig Cad. They type in the listing or in a configurator. You keep one project per family.

• text is the listing field. It is a string, not a mesh you rebuild by hand.
• font is a production dependency. Pin the file. Do not let a missing glyph fall back in silence.
• tag_width follows the measured text, or it is clamped so III and WWW both sit on a plate that still has a web.
• The ring is a cylinder subtracted from the plate. cutterDepth is derived from thickness so a thicker tag stays a through-hole.
• Two colors are two solids, not a texture. Primary and secondary filament are the listing dropdowns.

Text as Geometry is the treatment table (raised, recessed, cut-through). Beyond Sliders is the safe region when length, hole, and web fight each other.

The generator below is the same recipe with the variables exposed. Type a name. Width, hole, and thickness stay on the tree.

These four projects are the shop's current tag and plate family. The silhouette changes. The contract does not: a string, a font, a hole or a stand, two colors.

A chunky bag tag, a script tag, a rounded keychain, and a sweeping desk plate. Use them as the listing photos' live twins. A buyer who types Olivia here should get the same geometry you will print.

• Generic flexi dragons and animal multipacks. Same STL, same photos, AliExpress twins.
• Name keychains under about 8 USD if you value machine time. Volume at 3 USD is a price war.
• Gold-acrylic wedding toppers. That category's money is wood and acrylic, not FDM.
• Unlicensed Disney, Marvel, or D&D marks in the title. Etsy's creativity rules and takedowns both apply.
• Unmodified free files listed as original work.

Photo figurines sell. They are a sculpt-and-paint shop, not a second slider on the tag project.

Christmas ornaments should already be live in August. A year on the title (2026) is enough seasonality for an ornament family.

Pick one family and keep the others off the first listing.
