A customized print can use little material and still be costly to fulfill. The seller must generate and inspect the ordered geometry, prepare and occupy a machine, finish and check the part, package it, absorb failed attempts, and pay the costs of selling it.

Versioned Production established the records behind each shipped item. This article turns that material, machine-time, labor, failure, and rework evidence into a repeatable price.

Rig Cad supplies controlled variants and exposes the parameters that move production cost. The storefront can still present a fixed price, option surcharges, tiers, or a manual quote.

Price the production system

Filament or resin is visible and easy to calculate, but it is only one cost layer. Begin with the cost of one normal production attempt:

Allocate each cost once. If workspace or software is already included in the machine rate, do not add it again as overhead. Keep failed complete attempts out of normal material cost when yield is applied later.

Calculate normal-attempt cost

For material priced by mass,

where mass is measured in grams and pkgp_{kg} is the landed cost per kilogram. Use the slicer estimate for the released orientation and profile; visible model volume omits support, brim, purge, and process waste.

Machine and active-labor costs are

Build RmachineR_{machine} from ownership, maintenance, energy, consumables, and realistic productive hours—not every hour on the calendar. Count only active operator time as labor; unattended print time belongs in the machine layer. Include order review, Rig Cad configuration, geometry inspection, slicing, setup, finishing, inspection, communication, and packing when those steps are required.

Use deliberate, reviewed rates. A solo maker's time is not free, and electricity alone is not a machine-hour rate.

Apply yield, fees, and margin

If a released product and production profile succeeds on a fraction yy of attempts, expected production cost per shipped unit is

A 90% success rate therefore raises expected cost by about 11.1%, not 10%. Use observed yield for the specific released product and profile; a shop-wide percentage can hide an unreliable product behind easier work.

If ff is the percentage fee rate, FF is the allocated fixed selling fee, and mm is the target contribution margin as a share of price, a planning equation is

The denominator must remain positive. Margin is a share of selling price, not a markup added to cost. Verify the fees, taxes, shipping policy, refunds, and marketplace rules that apply to the actual sales channel. This is a pricing model, not accounting or tax advice.

Consider an illustrative personalized keychain. These numbers demonstrate the method; they are not a recommended market price.

With a $0.30 fixed selling fee, 12% percentage fees, and a 30% target contribution margin,

The customer-facing price can remain simple while the internal model accounts for tested variation. A longer name may widen the body, increase print time, reduce plate occupancy, or require more inspection. Multiple colors add purge, setup, and process risk. Use validated short-name, long-name, font, and color bands rather than pretending every configuration has identical cost.

Convert parameter ranges into pricing tiers

A parametric project may generate thousands of valid combinations. The listing does not need thousands of prices. Slice representative ordinary, boundary, and costly variants, then choose the smallest structure that covers the released family.

Watch for boundaries that change build-plate occupancy, support strategy, assembly, material, machine, or finishing. Base quantity discounts only on savings that actually occur, such as shared setup or packing. Keep pricing options aligned with the product's validated parameter space.

Escalate configurations that need a manual quote

Stop routine pricing when:

  • dimensions or options leave the validated product family;
  • the configuration needs an untested orientation, support strategy, material, machine, split, or assembly;
  • customer geometry or artwork requires cleanup or licensing review;
  • fit, safety, load, food-contact, or regulated use needs more evidence;
  • plate occupancy or slicer estimates cross the assumptions of the listed tier;
  • the deadline or quantity requires a different production plan; or
  • yield history is too sparse or unstable to support a routine price.

A manual quote should price the additional uncertainty and engineering work explicitly. Do not force an open-ended design request through a personalization surcharge intended for entering a tested option.

  1. Define the released product family and its pricing boundaries.
  2. Generate ordinary, boundary, and costly variants in Rig Cad.
  3. Slice them with the released profile and record material, time, and plate occupancy.
  4. Measure active labor and allocate machine, overhead, and packaging costs once.
  5. Apply observed yield, selling fees, and target margin.
  6. Publish the simplest tiers that cover the tested family, then compare estimates with actual fulfillment.
