About this project
An open-lattice Christmas bauble: a thin spherical shell cut into an organic net of ribs by a 3D Voronoi field, with a solid crown at the top pole and an upright hanging loop. The whole thing is one watertight body, ready to print.
How it's built
- Lattice - a Voronoi volume in strut mode, intersected with a sphere shell. The seed sites scale with the ball, so a 20 mm ball and a 120 mm ball share the same cell pattern.
- Crown - the part of the shell within the crown radius of the top pole stays solid, so ribs always reach the loop.
- Loop - a torus standing upright on the crown, its lower third sunk into the ball.
Parameters
| Group | Slider | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Size | Ball radius | 10-60 mm; the cell pattern scales with it |
| Lattice | Rib thickness | Width of each cell wall |
| Lattice | Rib fillet | Rounds the rib junctions; 0 for sharp |
| Shell | Shell thickness | Radial depth of the ribs |
| Shell | Crown radius | Size of the solid cap the loop sits on |
| Hanging loop | Loop radius / wire radius | Size of the hanger |
Sliders guard themselves: the crown must clear the loop, the loop hole can't close, and the shell stays under a quarter of the radius.
Printing
Print loop-up with tree supports under the lower hemisphere. Ribs of 1.6 mm or more print cleanly with a 0.4 mm nozzle; go thicker for large balls.
