Text Treatments Comparison

About this project

Three plaques side by side, each carrying the same word rendered a different way: lettering raised above the face, lettering recessed into it, and lettering cut clean through the plate. Every sample shares one font, one glyph size and one 45 by 30 by 3 mm plaque, so the only thing that varies between them is the treatment itself.

What to change

Sample text and font feed all three samples at once, so whatever you type appears three ways. The text field is capped at six characters, which keeps the word on the plaque at the larger glyph sizes. Glyph size runs from 6 to 11 mm and is shared for the same reason.

Raised and recessed

Raised height, from 0.6 to 3 mm, lifts the lettering off the face of the left plaque. Recess depth, from 0.3 to 1.2 mm, sinks the cutter into the middle one; the plaque is 3 mm thick, so the range stops short of breaking through. These are the two numbers worth moving. The same word at 0.6 mm and at 3 mm of relief reads very differently, and the shallow end of either range is where fine glyphs start to lose definition.

Cut through

The right-hand plaque subtracts a text solid taller than the plate, so the letters are openings rather than surface detail and there is no depth to set. Enclosed counters, the middle of an O or the bowl of an A, fall out as separate pieces. That is the practical difference between this treatment and the other two.
