HDD Cage

About this project

HDD Cage (1–6 bays)

A parametric, tool-less drive cage with slide-out drawers for 3.5" and 2.5" drives. Each drawer rides on rails in grooves in the cage walls, and the cage bolts to a case's 120 mm or 140 mm fan-mount holes.

Inspired by Moonyx.

Features

  • 1–6 bays, each with its own slide-in drawer.
  • Drive selector: 3.5" HDD or 2.5" drives at 7, 9.5, 12.5 and 15 mm. Drawer screw holes follow the standard bottom-mount patterns (#6-32 for 3.5", M3 for 2.5").
  • Compact cage: shrinks width, depth and bay height to the selected drive, with an adjustable bay height.
  • Drawer fit: optionally shortens the drawer and moves its walls in to hug a smaller drive.
  • Mounting: 140 mm fan pattern on tapered feet, 120 mm pattern through the floor (bays raised to clear the bolts), both, or none.
  • Open, ribbed drawer floor: hex vents under the drive, framed and cross-ribbed openings everywhere else for airflow and lower weight.
  • Drawer label: engraved or embossed text on one half of the handle, finger slot on the other, with an optional separate body for multi-material printing.
  • Hex ventilation in the side walls and the top and bottom plates.

Printing

  • Cage: print standing on its back face. The vents have flat tops and 60° sides, and the feet have 45° chamfered ends, so it needs no supports.
  • Drawers: print flat on the floor, one per bay. Turn on printLayout to lay one out beside the cage.
  • Label infill (optional): the Label_Inlays object is a separate body. Assign it to a second filament in your slicer.

Hardware

  • Drives to drawers: #6-32 screws (3.5") or M3 screws (2.5") through the drawer floor.
  • Cage to case: M4 bolts. For the 120 mm pattern, the nut slides into the pocket beside each floor hole.

Status and known limits

  • Untested: none of the fits (rail clearance, screw positions, bolt pockets) has been checked on a real print yet.
  • Same label on every drawer: all drawers share one label; per-bay numbering is not supported yet.
  • Long labels are trimmed: a label is cut to its half of the handle rather than resized, so very long text appears clipped.
